上人率弘法团赴台湾举行“护国息灾大悲法会”期间，为台湾的众生，他连续绝食三十多天。法会期间，因三藩市发生强烈地震，上人立即返美救灾。然后又飞回台湾，主持在台湾北部、中部、南部地区的弘法演讲大会。（这次地震应验了上人以前所说的话：我在

The Master led a delegation to Taiwan. The Master was fasting at this time to transfer merit to the living beings of Taiwan during the delegation’s Great Compassion Dharma Assembly for Protecting the Nation and Eradicating Disasters. He fasted for over thirty days during which he made four trips across the Pacific by air (he returned to San Francisco after the earthquake and then flew back to Taiwan) and headed Dharma Assemblies in north, central, and south Taiwan. (The earthquake proved the Master’s words, "For every day that I am in San Francisco, I will not allow an earthquake to occur in San Francisco.")
