上人在为弟子讲解《佛祖道影》

The Master teaching a class on the Buddhist Patriarchs

上人为每一位祖师写了一首八句的偈颂。

The Master wrote eight-line verses for each of the Patriarchs.

上课时，上人以他特有的“主观智能推动力”的方式来教导弟子们。多位弟子先用中、英文解释事先在黑板写好的课文，之后上人才开始讲解。这种教课方式，有时延续四、五小时之久。我们在这些课里学到很多重要的东西，同时也学到上人这种对教育的奉献精神。

His classes were conducted as part of the “Developing Inherent Wisdom” series, wherein disciples were required to explain the texts written on the board first in Chinese and English. Only after many disciples had practiced explaining the lesson would the Master finally give his explanation. Such classes often lasted four or five hours and were the arena for many kinds of learning, the Master’s dedication to educating being one of the primary lessons.

上人早晨很早就开始教课（六点或六点半），原因是：（一）煮饭的人可以先上课再去厨房。（二）老师及学生可以先来上课再去学校。（三）上人教完课回 三藩市，可以赶得上，过金门桥的免费时刻。

The Master would teach very early in the morning (6:00 or 6:30 a.m.) for several reasons: (1) so the cooks could attend before they had to go to the kitchen; (2) so that teachers and students could attend before they had to go to school; and (3) so that he could finish his lesson and make the drive back to San Francisco in time to cross the Golden Gate Bridge toll-free.

有时上人晚上从三藩市回到万佛圣城，没有给自己时间休息，就立即为弟子上课。

Sometimes the Master would teach in the evenings as soon as he arrived on the grounds after the long drive from San Francisco, without allowing himself time to rest and refresh himself.
